Today,
the art exhibit took place to celebrate the anniversary for the Salk Institute.
It took place on the courtyard, which is made of stone travertine and the space
can be used for anything. One side of the courtyard looks over the Pacific
Ocean, which provides views of the water, sunrises, sunsets and much more
scenery. I think the courtyard was a perfect addition to the Salk Institute. I
work in the science laboratory in the North Building, which is featured on one
side of the simple space. I overheard others speaking on how they believe the
courtyard brings unity to the Institute. Even though the buildings are
separated by about 50 yards, the workers in the buildings don’t often interact
with each other.
The laboratories are not open on the weekends, but
I often hear of the events taking place in the Salk courtyard. It is a great
space for congregating for any reason: weddings, receptions, school tours,
photographs, and in this case, an art exhibit. Artists believe that art and
science need creativity, its something they both need and therefore it unites
the two. Artists asked scientists, like me, for an art suggestion that would
fit in the community and feel of the Salk space. People suggested things like shaping
of a virus body and other scientific features, but it was agreed on to do a
piece that represented the sun.
So on this particular day at the Salk Institute, we
spent time in the courtyard to celebrate the anniversary and to spend time with
other workers at the Institute. We held conversations as we looked at the art
pieces and over the Pacific Ocean. The courtyard, with its wide open space,
many entrances, and scenic views provided a perfect place to spend a day of
celebration.
